What is Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder?
Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder is a serious and most misunderstood mental disorder. It is characterized by distorted perceptions of reality, disordered thoughts, and abnormal behaviors. Symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking, and lack of motivation. While there is no cure, with proper treatment, many individuals with schizophrenia can manage their symptoms and live fulfilling lives. Depression symptoms are often seen alongside schizophrenia, making treatment and support even more important for overall mental health.
How Can Schizophrenia Affect Your Life?
Schizophrenia makes you lose touch with reality, and it can be challenging to operate normally in your daily routines. You might feel brain fog, making it hard to determine delusion or reality. Due to these symptoms, you may avoid social encounters or maintain relationships.
People with schizophrenia have an unjustified stigma surrounding it. They are perceived as violent and dangerous. This creates an unnecessary hesitation among the ones who are suffering to reach out and seek professional treatment. They start relying on self-managing techniques to cope with the symptoms instead of getting much-needed professional treatment. People with schizophrenia have an unjustified stigma surrounding it. FAQs
Schizophrenia is a lifelong mental illness that does not have a cure. Most schizophrenia symptoms can be managed with psychiatric medication (mainly antipsychotics and mood stabilizers). Schizophrenia treatment can be most effective when it works in combination with medication and psychotherapy with a supportive family and social support. Fortunately, when schizophrenia is treated over a long time, most people can lead a normal and productive life.
Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder is a complex and serious mental health condition that starts with subtle signs. Due to this, it can go unnoticed for many years. One of the greatest challenges is that a person with the disorder doesn’t realize for a long period that they are ill. This delays the much-needed early intervention. A few early signs include irritability, mood swings, isolation from social circles, difficulty in focusing on a task, change in sleep patterns, etc.
Schizophrenia is incurable but often treatable. Some cases can recover fully, but it can’t be termed as cured as there is no sure way of knowing when there will be a setback and when the patient will relapse. Expert psychiatrists term such patients as “in-remission.”
To meet the criteria to be diagnosed as schizophrenic, the patient must experience at least 2 of the below symptoms for six months:
- Delusions
- Hallucinations
- Irregular behavior
- Disoriented speech
- Negative thinking
This criterion is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). An accurate diagnosis aids in deciding a targeted treatment approach that is more effective.
For effective treatment of schizophrenia, antipsychotics are recommended to treat acute episodes of schizophrenia. These medicines control psychosis and hallucinations. A psychiatrist specializing in schizophrenia treatment can also prescribe mood stabilizers, such as lithium and valproic acid. To achieve the best results, medication is often paired with psychotherapy.
